Queen Anne’s County Department of Health Announces Positive Rabies Case in Stevensville

Queen Anne’s County Department of Health Announces Positive Rabies Case in Stevensville

Public Health Risk Remains Low

The Queen Anne’s County Department of Health has announced that a deceased fox from the area of Love Point Road and Old Love Point Road in Stevensville has tested positive for rabies.  Residents in the area who may have had contact with the fox should reach out to the Health Department at 410-758-0720 for more information.

Though the threat of transmission remains minimal, community members should stay alert—particularly near locations with confirmed occurrences. Rabies is a deadly virus that spreads through scratches, bites, or saliva contact with an infected host. However, regular immunizations for domestic animals effectively prevent its spread. Although widespread public risk is minimized by vaccination, any exposure to a potentially rabid animal requires immediate medical attention.

Prevention is key and knowing what to do if an animal with suspected rabies is encountered remains the best defense. This includes:

  • Prevention: Avoid approaching, handling, or feeding stray animals or wildlife, including raccoons, bats, and foxes. Ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations and secure outdoor food sources.
  • Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR): If feeding a feral cat colony, ensure all cats in the community are vaccinated against rabies through local TNR programs or services.
  • Reporting & First Aid: Report unusual or aggressive animal behavior to Queen Anne’s County Animal Control at (410) 758-2393. If bitten or scratched, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and seek prompt medical care.
