Teaneck, New Jersey – LaToya James has built a distinguished career at the intersection of healthcare operations, compliance, technology, and organizational transformation. With more than 25 years of experience across the managed care and health systems landscape, she has consistently taken on complex challenges, identified gaps in capability, and developed functions, services, and roles that help organizations operate more effectively. Today, as Vice President of Global Healthcare Delivery at Cognizant Technology Solutions, she leads operations and transformation initiatives across the organization’s global healthcare delivery division, with a particular focus on integrating generative AI and automation into an evolving healthcare operating model.
LaToya’s career has been defined by adaptability and a willingness to step into opportunities that may not have existed before. Her professional journey began in the late 1990s at a managed behavioral healthcare organization, where she worked across implementation management and provider relations within credentialing and behavioral healthcare services. Those early experiences gave her a strong foundation in healthcare operations while exposing her to the importance of effective processes, regulatory requirements, and collaboration across different areas of an organization.
She later joined Health Services for Children with Special Needs (HSCSN) in Washington, DC. During her time there, she progressed from Accreditation and Compliance Manager to Director of Compliance and Provider Operations. Among her accomplishments was leading the organization to NCQA accreditation in utilization management while managing its District of Columbia Medicaid contract. The experience strengthened her understanding of how compliance, quality, operations, and healthcare delivery intersect and prepared her for increasingly expansive leadership responsibilities.
LaToya subsequently joined TriZetto Corporation as Director of Implementation. Her role quickly expanded as she identified opportunities to introduce new service lines, ultimately progressing to Assistant Vice President and then Vice President of Quality and Operational Compliance across both the company’s BPO and IT operations divisions. Her ability to recognize opportunities for improvement and translate them into operational capabilities became a defining characteristic of her leadership approach.
Following Cognizant’s acquisition of TriZetto, LaToya moved into the role of Vice President of Delivery Excellence for the Americas. In that capacity, she oversaw risk management, critical account recovery, process orchestration, and compliance across multiple industries, with an emphasis on healthcare. She also served as healthcare compliance officer for the Business Operations Division, helping lead the organization to NCQA CVO and URAC accreditations.
Today, LaToya’s work reflects the continuing evolution of healthcare and technology. At Cognizant Technology Solutions, she focuses on operations and transformation while examining how generative AI and automation can become part of the industry’s emerging operating model. For LaToya, however, the conversation around AI extends beyond technology itself. She believes one of the greatest challenges facing the industry is how the existing workforce will adapt and elevate its capabilities as AI accelerates.
She sees an important opportunity for professionals to understand, utilize, and develop AI models so they can remain active participants in the transformation taking place around them. In her view, the shift toward AI is happening regardless, making the ability to learn, adapt, and grow increasingly important for people across the industry.
LaToya’s educational background has contributed significantly to the way she approaches these challenges. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Frostburg State University in 1997 and a Master’s degree in Legal and Ethical Issues from the University of Baltimore in 2006. Her credentials also include Certified Professional in Healthcare Compliance (CPH), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), ITIL Foundation, and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Her professional development has also included ITIL certification and participation in the McKinsey Executive Leadership Program.
Her professional affiliations include the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA), International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), National Association of Professional Women (NAPW), and Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE). She has also been recognized with a Stevie Award and inclusion in Cambridge Who’s Who.
While LaToya’s professional accomplishments span healthcare compliance, operations, technology, and transformation, she attributes much of her success to something more personal: tenacity. She refuses to tell herself, “I can’t,” and credits the mentors and allies who have helped her navigate her career. Her family background has also played an important role. Coming from an international family where the family name carries significant weight, she learned that success is not necessarily about reaching the very top, but about continually striving to be one’s best.
Family support has remained central throughout her professional journey. LaToya credits her family, her husband, and his family for pushing her, encouraging her, praying for her, and helping her through difficult moments. She also recognizes the professional teams around her, emphasizing that success is rarely achieved alone.
Mentorship has been another defining influence. Early in her career, her first COO, Gary Bucello, gave the advice that has remained with her: “You can do it. Do not allow anyone to look at you and define you.” LaToya remembers that guidance as the moment when he lit a spark in her and helped her recognize what she was capable of accomplishing.
Another important mentor was Nancy Doellgast, who served as Vice President of Compliance at HSCSN. Nancy encouraged LaToya to “Never give up, no matter how frustrating it is.” Having faced challenges as a woman herself, Nancy provided LaToya with an example of how to navigate obstacles while continuing to move forward.
Today, LaToya continues to rely on the guidance of Alexis Samuel, her former leader at Cognizant, and colleague Phil Hausler. On difficult days, their reminder that “You’re strong. You know it. You’re a leader” provides the encouragement she needs to keep moving forward. For LaToya, those conversations demonstrate the lasting importance of having people who can provide perspective, reassurance, and honest support.
She carries that same philosophy into her advice for young women entering the industry. LaToya encourages women not to assume that the degree they earned in college must determine the entirety of their careers. A college major, she believes, does not have to define someone’s professional path. Instead, she encourages women to explore opportunities, identify connections between what they already know and what they want to learn, and permit themselves to try.
For LaToya, uncertainty should not automatically become a reason to step away from an opportunity. She encourages emerging professionals to determine their own paths through experience, rather than accepting someone else’s judgment that a particular field is “not for you.” Her own career reflects that philosophy, having evolved across compliance, healthcare operations, technology, delivery excellence, and transformation.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, LaToya remains committed to community engagement. She serves as a Board Member for CareMore, a nonprofit supporting underprivileged youth, and as Chair of the Annapolis United Soccer Club. These commitments reflect her continuing interest in mentorship, family, youth development, and giving back.
At the center of LaToya’s leadership philosophy are three values: respect, trust, and honesty. She views trust and honesty as inseparable, believing that strong teams are created when people feel safe enough to be honest, care about one another, share their perspectives, and learn from both success and failure.
